Quiet Slang (Beach Slang’s James Alex) Shares “Thirteen” (Big Star Cover) Off Upcoming Quiet Slang EP

QUIET SLANG REINTERPRETS BIG STAR’S CLASSIC
BEACH SLANG’S JAMES ALEX TO RELEASE QUIET SLANG EP
WE WERE BABIES & WE WERE DIRTBAGS
OUT OCTOBER 20TH ON POLYVINYL RECORDS

Beach Slang’s James Alex recently announced his new Quiet Slang EP, We Were Babies & We Were Dirtbags, and shared a cover of his own track “Bad Art & Weirdo Ideas”. James Alex’s newest project features him playing solo with a contributing pianist and cellist, and today you can hear the EP exclusive cover of Big Star’s “Thirteen”
at Noisey, who said “the Slang version is a fitting homage to Alex Chilton’s original, swapping out the acoustic guitar for piano and cello to create a swirling, lullaby-style take on it.”

James Alex explains his decision to cover Big Star’s “Thirteen”:

The first song I ever heard by Big Star was “September Gurls”. The second was “Thirteen”. After that, everything was different. I couldn’t define it or categorize it or even come close to figuring it out. It was just this haunting, weirdo, alien pop. And it walloped me. Some stuff is like that, you know? It rattles you around, shakes you loose, confuses you, fixes you. Too many things are made to make sense. Not everything should. So, yeah, this is me playing dress-up, chasing that same strange feeling, buzzing with confusion. Man, I hope I did alright.

Pre-order the EP HERE. (see full tracklisting below). A cassette version of the EP will be available on Cassette Store Day this October 14th. Stay tuned for a full length Quiet Slang announcement in the coming months!

About Quiet Slang, Alex says,

I suppose we’re all chasing something that resembles salvation, something that calms our bones. Maybe this is some small slice of that. Maybe it’s not. Maybe it’s chaos in soft clothes. Maybe it’s frightened. Maybe it’s fearless. Maybe it’s both. Or maybe it’s nothing. I don’t know, but I think about this: one day I’m going to be dust. And when my soul splits, maybe this will be the thing that sneaks me through the gates. If not, well, those are the breaks.
