Justin Erougian – Airwolf Paradise

How did you start?

I started with a little point and shoot in my young teens taking photos at house parties / 16ths etc – When I started to go out I thought… fuck it, I spent all my money on a SLR and just starting shooting at this club “WOW” for some drink cards – That led to shooting more clubs & parties – that led to more press shots and the rest is history.

Please give an example of your photography process?

It used to be get absolutely shit faced drunk and somehow the photos would come out super fun and candid – Although going through 2000+ photos would be quite annoying haha – Now it’s a bit more of a thought out process, but in a way it’s just become second nature.. I don’t really know how to explain it, it’s quite normal to me now.

What are you working on right now?

Currently working on a coffee table book showcasing a particular theme of photos from over the 9 years of shooting club photography – Also just about to launch a new leg of the Airwolf Paradise empire called “Paradise Creative” that focuses on video and photo of company events and media activations.

What is your gear setup?

My main club set up is Canon 6D + 430exiii + 16-35mm 2.8 – Full gear: Sigma 50mm, Sigma 70-200mm, Canon 24-70mm, Canon 28mm, couple triggers, umbrellas and all the other little bits and bobs.

What do you like to do outside of photography and does it affect photography?

I’m currently a touring DJ & Music producer under the alias “Airwolf”. The music side of things works great with the photography. I have a very quick personality I guess I would say and when I feel i’ve had enough of one, then I spend time on the other. I’ve been getting sooo much into video lately – So I’m really enjoying the challenge learning a whole new skill set.

How would you describe your photography style?

I would like to think its quite straight up simple. I don’t think there’s much too it BUT just catching that right moment that explains a whole lot.

Do you know any photography theory?

ZERO – I tried in high school but again, sitting there listening to my teacher rambling on.. I just wanted to get out there and shoot – So professor youtube was my main teacher haha.

Did you study photography?

Nope, I did think I needed it at the beginning but I dunno, I feel like that would just pigeon hole me to learn things a certain way, where I feel like experience is the best teacher.

What are your plans for the future?

I have no idea really.. Just taking things as they come – My current focus as mentioned before is concentrating on building my client base with my new company “Paradise Creative” and learning more about creating videos 🙂

What are you listening to at the moment?

I’ve had Joey badass’ new album on repeat for the past week. Really digging that.

Who are your top 5 influencers and icons?

I can’t think of anybody at the top of my head – usually people that want to push boundaries and do everything and everything good. I guess Tyler The Creator & Kanye come to mind in that respect.

When are you shooting next?

Tonight! 🙂 For the Architects at Prince Bandroom.
