HANK & CUPCAKES

What is your name and role within the band?

I’m Hank, 1/2 of Hank & Cupcakes (…) And I play bass with a complex network of pedals and amps sometimes referred to as “The Hank Machine”.

How did you start?

We started jamming together to cure a chronic existential boredom crisis (CEBC).

Where are you based?

Atlanta, GA

Please give an example of your music writing process?

Cupcakes writes on piano. We then de-construct and re-construct again via our instrumentation’s limitations.

What are you working on right now?

Right now we are touring with our 3rd album ‘Cheap Thrill’ and at the end of this tour we plan on writing and recording a new record. Which seems to be going in a more popish direction than the ones we did so far.

What is your gear setup?

We are a Drums + Vocals (Cupcakes) and Bass (Hank) duo.

Standing up, lefty drum set and a Fender Jazz processed by many, many pedals and signal splits.

What do you like to do outside of music and does it affect your music?

Cooking, hiking, spending time with our little baby girl, good friends, building effect pedals, combining all the above in different quantities. Everything effects everything. We are passionate about our music and enjoy what we do so much that we don’t separate life from work. It’s all the same thing.

How would you describe your music genre?

I think that we have a sound of our own, I don’t thing that we are genre committed in any way. We do what we want at the moment we do it.

Do you know any music theory?

Yes, I studied with some great teachers and even spent 6 months studying Cuban music in Havana.

What are your plans for the future?

To invent the ultimate Fuzz pedal!

How did you get into music?

Trying to be cool when I was 15.

What are you listening to at the moment?

Currently on the play list are Jim Croce, Concierto De Aranjues, Beethoven Pinao Sonatas, Dave Brubeck, Shugie Otis and Zakir Husein.

Who are your top 5 influences and icons?

Jim Morison, Jaco Pastorius, Anwar Sadat, Howard Stern, Louis CK

When are you playing next?

This weekend we’re playing in our hometown – Atlanta, it’s a tour kickoff show for a 4 month US tour were going out on.
