What is your name and role within EZTV?
Hey there. I’m Ezra. I play sing and player guitar in EZTV.
How did you start?
I’d been mucking about in my room for a couple of years in my mid 20’s, writing songs without much of an idea what I wanted to do with them. I was living with Shane (EZTV bassist) who I guess heard something decent through the walls and suggested I get together with Michael to play drums, who had been in a couple bands I’d played with before. I never really imagined it’d evolve into a proper power trio, but the songs we recorded turned out better than I thought..
Where are you based?
I live in Bedstuy, Brooklyn. Shane is in Bushwick and Michael is in Ridgewood (Queens).
Please give an example of your music writing process?
Typically, I write and demo songs in my apartment on an 8-track, that’s perpetually broken. I like to get some interesting sounds and rhythms down w/ a drum machine, and then write lyrics to that. I’ll bring it to the band and we’ll rework the idea until it makes sense as a group.
What are you working on right now?
I’ve finished about 15 demos and we’re starting to work on some of these new songs. We’re starting to think about a new album, but taking our time at this point.
What is your gear setup?
Live I’ve been playing a Baldwin Baby Bison guitar into the head of a Fender Musicmaster bass amp (w/ a 10″ speaker). I usually use a little chorus/reverb and sometimes delay for lead parts. For recording I’m usually more adventurous– lately, I’ve been using an old Ibanez Af201 filter that sounds very funky and nice.
What do you like to do outside of music and does it affect your music?
I work part-time at a nonprofit which runs exchange program and residencies for international musicians. I’m not so sure it directly filters into EZTV too much, but I’ve always enjoyed hearing music from around the world, especially more traditional sounds. Right now I’m reading a bunch of essays by Donna Haraway, who’s mostly well known for writing the Cyborg Manifesto.
How would you describe your music genre?
Earnest, for better or worse.
Do you know any music theory?
A little? I took one intro music theory class in college and got a B-.
What are your plans for the future?
We’re looking at doing a bit of touring in September and November, including probably our first time in California/West Coast. I’m also traveling a bit for work and fun this fall/winter which I’m excited about. I love New York, but I always feel like I need periodic breaks to maintain my sanity.
How did you get into music?
When I was about 12, I got an injury and couldn’t play soccer for a summer. So I bought a crappy Vantage guitar and started writing angsty 90’s alt rock songs.
What are you listening to at the moment?
I’ve been listening to the recent TOPS and H. Hawkline albums. Also the Look Blue Go Purple compilation that got reissued is great.
Who are your top 5 influences and icons?
Hard to pick, but some oldie favorites are Arthur Russell, Margo Guryan, Chris Spedding, Christine McVie and Bill Withers.
When are you playing next?
